Cinque Terre colorful seaside villages along the Ligurian coast

The Cinque Terre are ancient fishing villages located along the rugged Italian coast. Each of these villages is characterized by colorful houses and vineyards clinging to the steep terraces carved into the coast. The harbors are crowded with fishing boats, and in the typical trattorias you can try seafood specialties, as well as the famous Ligurian sauce: pesto. The Sentiero Azzurro, a hiking trail that extends along the coast, connects the Cinque Terre and offers splendid sea views.

An ancient village on the Riviera di Levante, it is one of the Cinque Terre. The final stretch of Via Belvedere is particularly evocative, forming a veritable balcony overlooking the sea and ending in a panoramic little square dedicated to Eugenio Montale. The plaque in his honor features the first lines of the poem "Riviere":

The village is the starting point of the famous Via dell'Amore7, the best-known – and according to some, most beautiful – stretch of the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) that connects the towns of the Cinque Terre.

The town of Monterosso is part of the Cinque Terre National Park, and the sea off its coast is part of the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area. The municipality is also part of the UNESCO site of Portovenere, Cinque Terre and Islands.

It is one of the five centuries-old villages that make up the Cinque Terre, on the Ligurian coast in northwestern Italy. Colorful houses surround the small tourist harbor. The Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia has a bell tower topped by an elegant dome. Nestled among the rocks, Doria Castle is a medieval defensive structure with a cylindrical tower. Just below the castle is the Bastione Belforte.

Cruise to the Cinque Terre in Liguria

Ferries from Viareggio to the Cinque Terre are operated by Line 03 Viareggio and Riviera Apuana. The service, which departs from Molo del Greco, first reaches Porto Venere and then continues, for a supplement, to the Cinque Terre villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, and Monterosso).
